Whether you were born with an imperfect smile or your smile has dulled over time, dental bonding is a quick and inexpensive way to transform your smile — and self-confidence. Dental bonding involves applying a composite resin material to the surface of teeth, concealing an array of minor cosmetic imperfections, including cracks, chips, stains and misshapen teeth. The result is a seamless, natural-looking smile that you will be proud to show off.
Dental bonding is one of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments offered at the practice of Dr. Mia Fitzgerald. The procedure can be performed as a standalone treatment or as part of a smile makeover, depending on your specific cosmetic needs and goals, which our talented cosmetic dentist would be more than happy to discuss with you in person.
What Can Dental Bonding Fix?
Dental bonding is a versatile cosmetic treatment that can improve the following cosmetic issues:
- Cracks or chips in the teeth
- Small gaps or spaces between the teeth
- Stains or discoloration (including those that cannot be properly treated with whitening products)
- Misshapen or unevenly sized teeth
- Eroded tooth enamel
Procedure Details
Before recommending dental bonding, Dr. Fitzgerald will meet with you for an evaluation and dental exam. In addition to discussing your concerns and goals of treatment, she will evaluate your teeth and check for dental problems. If there’s an issue present, such as a cavity that needs filling, it will need to be addressed before moving forward with dental bonding.
To begin the dental bonding procedure, Dr. Fitzgerald will use a shade guide to select the shade of resin that blends in with your teeth and looks the most natural. She will then prepare the teeth that will receive the bonding material. Dr. Fitzgerald will apply a gentle phosphoric acid solution to the tooth or teeth, which will create tiny channels or etches that will help the bonding material adhere more strongly. Next, she will apply the composite resin onto the tooth, carefully sculpting it to create the desired shape and size. The resin will be hardened into place with a blue light or laser. Dr. Fitzgerald will then buff and polish the resin for a flawless look.
The results of dental bonding can last for many years. Bonded teeth require no special care, but should be brushed and flossed regularly. We recommend you avoid eating hard or sticky foods, or chewing hard foods and objects that can potentially crack the resin material. You should also avoid grinding or clenching your teeth. Our team will be happy to provide more tips during your dental appointment with us.
