Missing several or all of your teeth can be disheartening in many ways. Not only can it impair your oral health and ability to chew your favorite foods, but it can also affect your self-confidence and willingness to smile. Fortunately, a wide range of tooth replacement options are available to restore the strong, healthy and complete smile you once had. One such option is dentures. Throughout her many years of experience, Dr. Mia Fitzgerald has helped hundreds of patients regain their ability to chew, speak and smile with full and partial dentures. Today’s dentures are durable, lightweight and comfortable. Using only the highest-quality dental materials, Dr. Fitzgerald creates custom-made dentures that appear both natural and beautiful.
Your Denture Options
Dentures can replace several teeth or all teeth in the lower arch or upper arch.
Full or complete dentures replace all teeth in an arch. They consist of artificial teeth attached to a pink acrylic base. Lower dentures rest on the gums while upper dentures cover the upper palate. Conventional dentures are removable and held in place with special adhesive products. Partial dentures replace some but not all of the teeth. They rest on the gum tissue and attach to the remaining teeth in the mouth.
In addition to removable dentures, Dr. Fitzgerald offers implant-supported dentures, which are fixed in the mouth through the placement of dental implants. Dental implants are titanium screws or posts that are surgically inserted into the jaw, providing support for the dentures. Implant-supported dentures can replace several or all missing teeth, and can only be removed by a dentist.
All of these options will be discussed in detail during your in-office consultation with Dr. Fitzgerald.
The Design and Placement of Dentures
The creation and placement of dentures requires several dental appointments. In the first, Dr. Fitzgerald will take impressions of gums, and in the case of partial dentures, your remaining teeth. The impressions will be sent to a dental laboratory that will make your custom-made dentures. Dr. Fitzgerald will provide you with temporary, removable dentures as you await your permanent ones.
If you are receiving implant-supported dentures, you will be referred to a specialist that will place the implant posts during an oral surgery procedure.
Once your dentures are ready, you will return for a second appointment. Dr. Fitzgerald will place the dentures, check your bite, and if needed, make any last-minute adjustments.
Adjusting to Your Dentures
Dr. Fitzgerald will provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your dentures. It is normal to experience some sensitivity and discomfort as you adjust to wearing your dentures. It may take some time for you to acclimate to chewing, biting and speaking clearly. Over time, the dentures will feel more secure and comfortable in your mouth.
